"My work reflects the fusion of heritage, inspiration and a deep connection to the art of iconic automobiles like the Porsche 911."
A self-taught French sculptor, Antoine Dufilho reinvents legendary automobiles as metal sculptures. His works break the car body down into successive layers, a rhythm of solids and voids that exposes the car's skeleton and creates an illusion of movement as the viewer walks around it.
Trained first in medicine and then in architecture, he creates instantly recognizable car sculptures, from Porsche and Ferrari to Bugatti and Aston Martin. Galerie de Bellefeuille is proud to count him among the contemporary sculptors it presents.
Car sculpture born from a family story
Between the Dufilho name and Bugatti, the bond is almost hereditary. Actor Jacques Dufilho, Antoine's great-uncle, was a passionate Bugatti collector. It was also with him, an actor, painter and sculptor, that the young Antoine discovered the visual arts. Passed down through the generations, this love of cars became the heart of Antoine Dufilho's work.
From anatomy to architecture: sculpting the skeleton
Before sculpture, Antoine Dufilho studied medicine and discovered the complexity of human biomechanics. He went on to study architecture, graduating from the École d'architecture et de paysage de Lille. These two disciplines shaped his approach: working the framework, stripping the structure bare to reveal a rhythm of solids and voids that brings lightness and dynamism to the form.
Self-taught, he experimented with casting and welding to build his aesthetic step by step, then devoted himself fully to sculpture from 2012. All his works are made in a studio he designed himself from shipping containers, in the countryside near Lille.
Car sculptures in motion
Each Antoine Dufilho sculpture offers a kinetic vision of a static object. As the viewer walks around the work, the layers tighten or open up and the car's silhouette recomposes itself. The interplay of symmetry and asymmetry creates a sense of acceleration or deceleration, as if the vehicle were caught at full speed.
The models he has reinterpreted include true icons:
-
Porsche 930 Turbo and Carrera GT,
-
Ferrari 250 GTO,
-
Dino 246,
-
Enzo and 812 Superfast,
-
Bugatti Veyron,
-
Aston Martin DB5 and DBS,
-
Lamborghini Miura,
-
Mercedes 300SL and Morgan Plus Four.
Some pieces also come in a wall-mounted version.
Beyond cars, he applies the same language to monuments such as the Chrysler Building, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty, and now explores movement and lightness through abstraction.
Collecting Antoine Dufilho
Owning one of Antoine Dufilho's car sculptures means bringing home a piece at the crossroads of design and architecture, one that changes with every angle. His works are shown in our Montreal and Toronto spaces and at the art fairs the gallery attends, including Art Miami and Art Toronto.
Collectors drawn to works that shift with the viewer's gaze will also appreciate J. Margulis's kinetic constructions, whose stacked layers change with the viewer's position.
For more contemporary French sculpture, explore Richard Orlinski's sculptures, another artist's take on form and volume.
To continue exploring movement and perception, Carlos Cruz-Diez's kinetic paintings offer a natural dialogue with Dufilho's work.
