Overview
"I want my art to be cosmopolitan & transgenerational"
- Richard Orlinski
A French sculptor born in Paris in 1966, Richard Orlinski has been the best-selling French contemporary artist in the world since 2015. A former architect, he shapes faceted animal figures, cut like gemstones and dressed in pop colours, that embody his "Born Wild" philosophy: turning the raw force of instinct into a refined elegance. His sculptures in resin, aluminum and bronze have travelled the world, from luxury storefronts to snow-capped peaks.
At Galerie de Bellefeuille, we are proud to present a selection of his most sought-after editions and sculptures, including works from the iconic Wild Kong and Crocodile series.
The Icon of Pop Animal Sculpture
It all began in 2004 with a bright red resin crocodile, the first piece of a bestiary that would become recognizable the world over. Inspired by popular culture and by the great names of pop art, Richard Orlinski developed an immediate visual language: animals as symbols of freedom, power and passion, reduced to clean, geometric facets. The result is a Richard Orlinski sculpture that is instantly identifiable, where mirror-polished surfaces and vivid hues play with light and space.
The Richard Orlinski artist's gesture is as conceptual as it is sculptural. Behind every gorilla, every panther and every bear lies the same idea: to channel the animal instinct within each of us and sublimate it into beauty. This tension between instinct and civilization runs through his entire body of work and explains its transgenerational reach. Named Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2021 and followed by a community of several million people, Orlinski has made the democratization of art his signature, installing his monumental sculptures in public spaces as well as behind gallery walls.
Signature Series: Wild Kong
Now the artist's defining emblem, the Wild Kong series distills his entire grammar. The gorilla, an avowed tribute to the mythical figure of King Kong, strikes a defiant stance, chest out, with sharp ridges that catch the light. The piece ranges from small resin formats designed for collectors to monumental versions in aluminum or chrome, polished like mirrors, that reflect their surroundings.
Beyond its visual power, orlinski wild kong embodies the very heart of the "Born Wild" statement. The primate, a symbol of untamed strength, is frozen in a contemporary, lustrous material: brutality becomes sculpture, and primal energy becomes an object of contemplation. Each variation in size or colour replays the same opposition between animality and modernity.
The Crocodile Series
The orlinski crocodile is not merely a single work: it is the founding act of Richard Orlinski's career. This scarlet resin reptile, created in 2004, laid the groundwork for his entire formal vocabulary, the faceted cut, the saturated colour and the animal subject loaded with symbolism. Now an iconic piece of the bestiary, it continues to be reissued in different formats and colourways.
Where the crocodile asserts an almost heraldic presence, it also recalls the artist's roots in a long tradition of animal sculpture that he reinvents through the codes of pop art. It is this lineage, bridging art history and contemporary culture, that gives the series its lasting power.
Collecting Richard Orlinski
To acquire a work by Richard Orlinski is to claim a fragment of recent pop-art history, not simply a decorative object. The orlinski editions offer several points of entry: wider-run resin editions for a first acquisition, numbered limited editions, and monumental sculptures for the most ambitious collections. This range accompanies the collector, from a first purchase to the prestige piece poised to appreciate in value.
Admirers of this glossy, resolutely figurative pop sculpture will find a kindred universe among other artists represented by the gallery: Jeff Koons's pop sculptures, an acknowledged influence on Orlinski, KAWS sculptural editions, and Brendan Murphy's contemporary sculptures.
