“I have an innate reverence for the things we eat...Food brings people together and there is no better way to celebrate life…”
An American sculptor born in 1963 in New Haven, Connecticut, Peter Anton has made food the heart of his work. Celebrated for his hyperrealistic, oversized Peter Anton food sculptures, he transforms chocolates, sweets and frozen treats into monumental objects of desire. "I like to create art that can lure, charm, tease, disarm and surprise," says the artist, whose works celebrate pleasure, indulgence and togetherness.
At Galerie de Bellefeuille, we are proud to present a selection of his most sought-after sculptures, including works from his iconic boxed chocolates and candy hearts series.
The Icon of Hyperrealist Confectionery Sculpture
The work of Peter Anton rests on a principle as simple as it is powerful: to enlarge and elevate the things we eat. A Peter Anton sculpture does not merely imitate food, it exalts its texture, colour and substance until it provokes a genuine sensory response. Glossy glazes, crinkled wrappers, mouth-watering surfaces: every detail is rendered with a precision that blurs the line between the real object and the work of art.
Behind this apparent indulgence lies a deeper statement. "I have an innate reverence for the things we eat. Food brings people together, and there is no better way to celebrate life," he explains. His food sculptures speak of desire, memory and sharing, drawing on a pop imagery that is instantly recognizable and universally joyful. This joyful accessibility, paired with masterful technical execution, explains the broad appeal of his artwork among collectors and the wider public alike.
Signature Series: The Boxed Chocolates
The Peter Anton chocolate box works are the artist's defining signature. Conceived as large-format assortments, pieces such as Sweetheart Sampler, Original Variety and Utopia Assortment present a parade of perfectly sculpted chocolates nestled in their case. The viewer instantly recognizes the ritual of tasting, transposed to a scale that turns an intimate pleasure into a spectacular celebration.
The strength of this series lies in its technique and its symbolic charge. By freezing chocolate in a durable material and magnifying every detail, the artist captures a moment of happiness and temptation. The boxed chocolate becomes a portrait of abundance and generosity, an object at once familiar and resolutely iconic.
The Candy Hearts Series
Alongside the chocolates, the candy hearts extend the artist's tender and playful universe. Inspired by Valentine's Day sweets, these colourful hearts carry sweet, knowing messages in a tangy palette that is immediately uplifting. The series converses with a long tradition of pop art, where the everyday object becomes a subject of contemplation.
That same spirit runs through his other sweet repertoires, from ice bars to donuts and macaron towers. Each time, the Peter Anton ice cream piece or hyperrealist treat rekindles the same emotion: the joyful nostalgia of childhood and the promise of a shared pleasure.
Collecting Peter Anton
To acquire a work by Peter Anton is to bring home a piece of contemporary art that is both immediate and deeply endearing. His sculptures, available across a range of formats and subjects, appeal as much to pop-art enthusiasts as to collectors seeking uninhibited, convivial works. Widely held in private, corporate and museum collections, his creations combine visual delight with lasting value.
Admirers of this pop, hyperrealist and food-inspired universe will find echoes among other artists represented by the gallery: Jeff Koons's pop sculptures, Roberto Bernardi's hyperrealist sweets and KAWS sculptural editions.
To discover his art for sale and explore the works currently available, our team welcomes you to our spaces in Montreal and Toronto.
