Julian Opie

Born in London in 1958 and a graduate of Goldsmiths College, Julian Opie is a British visual artist associated with the New British Sculpture movement. His minimalist aesthetic language is characterized by the use of thick black lines and flat areas of vivid color, synthesizing the human figure and the landscape. Drawing inspiration from classical portraiture as well as modern signage and Japanese prints, Opie reduces the subject to its visual essence, creating icons of the contemporary world.
