The title of the painting infers an idea that absent things can leave traces of their presence. The painting weaves and floats art historical elements from Europe and China. References to western art include painted flowers from the Dutch Golden Age, a black and white hat from the Italian Renaissance, to a modern René Magritte “cut-out” form with the sky showing through. Asian cultural references include a Song Dynasty painted landscape, a Chinese puzzle ball and a scholar’s rock. Central to the painting is a shape of a fox, an animal which has various symbolic meanings through history. Perhaps, in this work, it’s the animal noted to be active mainly at dusk and dawn, a time between night and day, or a time “between two worlds”. Ultimately, the painting is a dream image, coherent and logical in its own way, leaving the viewer to weave meaning.
