Overview
"While the expressiveness of his painterly strokes make a definitive statement of their own, Zhang is not solely interested in creating the allure of texture; rather, it is part of his integral painting process to achieve an overarching state of equilibrium on canvas: between positive and negative spaces, the thick and thin, and contrasting color tones."

Zhang He

Zhang He is an internationally acclaimed Chinese-Canadian painter whose work masterfully bridges the energy of Eastern calligraphy with the freedom of Western abstraction. Based in Montreal since 1998, he is celebrated for vibrant abstract compositions that capture "chi", the vital life force, through a unique, sculptural density of oil pigment.

At Galerie de Bellefeuille, we are proud to offer a selection of his most sought-after editions and sculptures, including works from the iconic State of Becoming and Winter Waltz series. We invite you to admire the artist’s work in person at our Montreal art gallery. If you are unable to visit us, you can also explore the collection remotely through our viewing room.

The Icon of Abstract Expressionism & Calligraphy

Born in 1963 in Shenyang, China, Zhang He forged his artistic identity at the intersection of two worlds. Trained at the Shenyang Institute in photography, stage design, and oil painting, his move to Montreal marked a decisive evolution in his visual language. His style, deeply influenced by the Quebec Automatistes and Abstract Expressionism, is characterized by a visceral, physical execution.

The approach of the artist Zhang He relies on a meticulous equilibrium between positive and negative space, and a bold interplay of chromatic contrasts. Working on canvases laid flat, he engages his entire body in the act of painting, transforming each brushstroke into a physical meditation that transcends mere texture to reach a harmonious state of movement and thought.

Signature Series: State of Becoming

The State of Becoming series, featuring recent works from 2025, perfectly illustrates the artist's quest to capture pure movement and perpetual transformation. In these pieces, the generous use of oil pigment creates a sculptural bas-relief where color structures the pictorial space organically.

Technique and Significance: The artist uses thick layers of impasto to evoke the invisible vital forces of nature and the human body. This series does not merely seek aesthetic appeal; it renders the ephemeral beauty of the moment and the cycle of life tangible through a dialogue between chaos and order.

The Winter Waltz Series

In the Winter Waltz series, Zhang he explores a more nuanced palette while maintaining the calligraphic spontaneity that defines his practice. These works demonstrate a particular sensitivity to seasonal rhythms and profound human emotions, linking his Eastern roots to the stark beauty of Canadian winters. Each gesture, rendered with haptic fervor, appears etched into the canvas, creating an intimate encounter between the viewer and the natural environment.

Collecting Zhang He

Acquiring a piece by Zhang He is more than a purchase; it is an investment in a piece of contemporary art history where the energy of the gesture becomes heritage. His paintings, featured in prestigious collections such as Tiffany & Co. and LVMH, represent a secure choice for discerning collectors seeking to combine emotional depth with a monumental physical presence. In today's market, he stands as a pivotal figure whose work continues to redefine the boundaries of modern abstraction. Who is Zhang He? He is an artist who invites us to experience the invisible vitality of the world through the raw power of paint.
